Fetal Development: Week 16

Select Week Number

Week 16 of your Pregnancy

Your baby now weighs about 3 to 4 ounces or 85 to 115 grams and is almost 5 inches or 12.7 cm from head to buttocks – about the size of an avocado.

Want to know if it is a boy or a girl? An ultrasound may be able to give you an answer this week, maybe even with a smile or two.

Pregnancy Week 16Your baby’s head is now more erect and he/she does breathing movements, inhaling and exhaling small amounts of amniotic fluid.

Your baby can now grasp with his/her hands, kick and somersault.

What to Expect

This week the fundus (top or your uterus) will be around 6 inches or 16 cm above your pubic bone (about midway between your pubic bone and navel).

Those ligaments and muscles which are supporting your enlarging uterus are getting a work out and sometimes they protest, resulting in sharp twinges of pain.

Something to look forward to – You can usually begin to feel your baby’s first movements between weeks 16 to 20, although it will probably be closer to week 20 for a first pregnancy.

Tip for Week 16

Time to start taking photos of your growing pregnant belly! Don’t forget to include your partner in a few shots as well.

These will be gorgeous keepsakes that will bring back lots of memories in years to come.
