Fetal Development: Week 12

Select Week Number

Week 12 of your Pregnancy

By the end of this week your baby may have reached 2½ inches or 6 cm in length (about the size of a lime).

Fetus at 12 weeks gestationHair is growing on your baby’s head and the taste buds and vocal cords have begun developing.

The eyes are moving closer together and the ears are almost in their normal position on the side of the head.

Complex reflexes such as sucking and touching may be visible on ultrasound.

Your baby can now open and close his/her hands and curl his/her toes.

An ultrasound at this stage will show a very active little individual!

You will not feel this activity yet as there is still a lot of room for baby to move around in the amniotic fluid.

The placenta is now well developed  and doing its all important work in providing oxygen and nutrients to your growing baby and removing waste products from your baby’s blood.

What to Expect

Congratulations, you are nearly at the end of the first trimester!

By now, your uterus has stretched to the size of a softball (4½ -5½ ins or 12-14 cm) and is starting to lift out of the pelvic area, easing the pressure on your bladder.

If you have developed a dark line of pigmentation below your belly button (called the linea nigra) or dark patches on your face (called chloasma), don’t worry, they will disappear after birth (although it does take a few months).

Good news: from week 12, your energy level is likely to start returning and you will start feeling more like your old self again.

Tips for Week 12

If you have kept the news of your pregnancy a secret, now is a good time for your pregnancy announcement.

A dental appointment may sound like the last thing you want to have, but it is important to have healthy teeth and gums, so if you have not had a checkup recently, make an appointment but do let them know that you are pregnant (no dental x-rays).
